Easy DIY Projects To Make Student College Housing Feel Like Home

The beauty of well decorated student college housing is that they often feel like miniature homes. All too often blog posts suggest that college housing should be decorated with costly, although nifty, decor. Fortunately for students attending the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, we have gathered together a few DIY projects that will help to make your chosen student college housing feel like home, without breaking the bank.

Student College Housing Embraces DIY Decor Projects

Amplifying the decor of your student college housing is made easier with these fun DIY crafts.

Create a rustic shelf with cinder blocks, paint, and a couple of pieces of wood. — To make this unique book shelf, simply paint the cinder blocks your favorite color. Stack the blocks to the desired height. Sand each piece of wood and apply a finish or varnish. Next, balance the wood between the cinder blocks. Finish by placing your books, school supplies, picture frames, and any other small decorations on your customized DIY book shelf.

Create splashes of color with DIY seat cushions. — To complete this project you will need a needle, thread, cotton stuffing, sewing pins, scissors, and your favorite fabric patterns. Trace the seat of your dining room chairs onto your piece of fabric. Add a one inch border to the tracing. Next, create a mirror image of the tracing on the fabric, by flipping the fabric so that it doubles in size. These two tracings will serve as the top and bottom of the cushion, while each of the one inch borders will give you the room needed to add cotton stuffing. Cut out the tracing; remember that you should only have one piece of fabric when you are finished. Add the cotton stuffing. Using pins, close the tracing so that the stuffing is sealed inside. Confirm that your new cushion fits on the chair before you begin to sew. Sew the cushion closed. If you want to attach the cushion to the chair, then you will need to cut a small piece of fabric and sew it to the back of the cushion. This piece of fabric can then be tied to the chair, and voila, you have a new DIY seat cushion!

Repurpose a dresser into a TV stand. — This DIY task doesn’t require any tools. Instead of using a traditional TV stand, you can use a dresser instead. Neatly store your DVDs and video games in the dresser drawers. Place TV blankets in the larger drawers. Enjoy the functionality of your new TV stand and provide a new look for your living room.

Hopefully these fun DIY tasks have helped you to envision new and exciting ways that you can transform student college housing into cozy homes. For additional tips, or to learn more about leasing a student-friendly apartment in Knoxville, contact a member of The Standard at Knoxville team today!
